Hiranyakas Story

Hiranyaka’s Story

Once upon a time, in the southern city of Mahilaropya, there was a great shrine of Lord Shiva, where many people came to offer their prayers, ask for blessings, and leave offerings of delicious sweetmeats and ripe, juicy fruits. At this holy place, lived a hermit named Choodakarna, a monk known for his devout life and simple needs.

Each day, Choodakarna would walk through the city with his alms bowl, collecting offerings from the generous city dwellers. The rich residents would fill his bowl with tasty treats such as sugar sweets, pomegranates, and mangoes.

One day, as the hermit returned to his cell, he placed the surplus dainties he did not eat into his alms bowl and hung it on a peg high on the wall. As night enveloped the city, a clever mouse named Hiranyaka and his followers would skillfully scale the walls, creep into the cell, and feast upon the monk’s carefully saved treats.

Choodakarna, though a peaceful man, was greatly troubled by Hiranyaka’s nocturnal visits and would clatter his stick upon the bowl throughout the night, trying in vain to scare the little thieves away. But the wily mice were not deterred.

During this time, a friend of Choodakarna, a round bellied man named Brihaspati, visited the hermit. After sharing a meal, the monk hung the remaining delicacies on the high peg. As Brihaspati recounted his travels to Choodakarna, the hermit kept rattling his stick against the alms bowl, much to his friend’s annoyance. Choodakarna explained his actions by sharing his frustration at the bold little mouse, Hiranyaka, who impishly stole from the bowl each night.

Determined to help, Brihaspati began to dig into Hiranyaka’s burrow with a spade, discovering the mouse’s hidden stash of gold and provisions. The two friends took Hiranyaka’s treasures for themselves, leaving the mouse and his followers hungry and homeless.

Desperate for food, Hiranyaka made another daring attempt to reach the alms bowl, but weakened by hunger, he failed and crashed to the ground. Just as Brihaspati swung a mighty blow with his stick, Hiranyaka narrowly escaped, reinforcing the sad truth that without home or wealth, one’s power diminishes.

Realizing they could no longer rely on their old tricks for survival, Hiranyaka and his followers set out to find new fortunes. Along their journey, they met Chitragriva, a bird caught in a net. Hiranyaka helped free him, forming a new alliance that would lead them to many other adventures, and ultimately, a new beginning.
