The Clever Jackals Four Foes

Once upon a time, in a dense and ancient forest, there lived a very clever Jackal named Mahachaturaka. His daily routine involved wandering through the thickets and clearings in search of food and adventure. But one fateful day, Mahachaturaka encountered something that would test all his cunning and wit.

In a clearing, he came across the enormous corpse of an elephant. The Jackal danced around it in sheer delight, anticipating the feast he was about to have. However, his happiness was short-lived, for the skin of the elephant was intact and too tough for his teeth to tear open. As he pondered over how to access the succulent flesh within, he became aware of the presence of a lion, the king of the forest.

Mahachaturaka knew he couldn’t claim the elephant before the mighty lion. So, with the utmost respect, he said to the lion, “Sire, I am merely your humble servant, guarding this elephant for you. Please honour me by accepting and devouring this magnificent feast.”

The lion, with his pride and principles, spoke with a dismissive air, “I never consume prey that I haven’t hunted myself. You may have the elephant, little Jackal.” And, to the Jackal’s surprise, the lion departed without touching the carcass.

As the lion left, a tiger approached, and once again, Mahachaturaka had to think fast. “Oh, mighty Tiger,” he fibbed, “this elephant was slain by the lion, who is now bathing. He bid me inform him if a tiger dared approach his kill.” The tiger, filled with fear, begged for the Jackal’s silence and fled.

Not long after, a leopard appeared, and the Jackal saw his chance. He flattered the leopard and persuaded him to tear open the elephant’s carcass. As the leopard did the hard work, the Jackal warned of the lion’s return and the leopard, scared for its life, escaped as quickly as it had come.

Alone at last, Mahachaturaka was just about to enjoy his meal when another Jackal charged in, intent on sharing the bounty. Our Jackal knew he must defend his claim. He thought, “I have used my brains and courage thus far – now let me show my might.” And so with a ferocious battle, he vanquished the intruder and finally sat down to a well-deserved meal.

This tale of the Jackal and his four foes teaches us the importance of wit, courage, and the right tactic for the right enemy. It reminds us that even the weak can find strength by using their wit to overcome obstacles.
