The Tale of the Learned Brahmins and The Lion
The Tale of the Learned Brahmins and The Lion
Once upon a time, in the far reaches of ancient India, there lived four Brahmins who were the closest of friends. Three of them were deeply versed in scholarly arts but sadly lacked the simplest thread of commonsense. The fourth Brahmin, on the contrary, was not schooled in elaborate sciences, but his mind was a rich tapestry of practical wisdom.
Eager to make use of their vast knowledge, the friends decided to venture into distant lands. “For what good is learning if it is not displayed before kings and rewarded?” they proclaimed. And so, with spirits high and gazes set beyond the horizon, they embarked on their grand journey.
Not before long, the eldest, shrouded in the pride of his erudition, questioned the value of commonsense in a world that revered bookish knowledge. “Let the unscholarly one with keen sense return home,” he declared, “as no king would ever award the uninscribed.”

Yet the heart of compassion still beat in their midst—the third leaned on kindness and spoke, “We have shared our childhood and dreams; let him stay, and in our fortune, he shall partake.” And so it was settled, the man of commonsense continued by their side.
Then the forest deep they reached, where nature lay uninterrupted. A skeleton of a lion, magnificent even in death, lay in solemn rest.
“This is our moment to unfurl the might of our art!” one of the scholars exclaimed. The first rejoined the bones, the second draped it with flesh, and the third stood ready to gift the breath of life.

However, the man vested with no scroll but sense interjected, “This creature is a lion, born of the wild. Revive him, and he shall tear us asunder!” But his words turned invisible to the scholars’ eyes, clouded by the mirage of proving their mastery.
Reluctantly, he realized the scholars would not yield to foresight, so hiking up his dhoti, the commonsense Brahmin swiftly ascended a nearby tree.

No sooner had he reached a safe perch, the lion, wild and untamed, was returned to life. With a furious roar, it sprang upon the creators of its second dawn.

The story of the learned Brahmins and the lion that was made alive again is a timeless reminder from the Panchatantra: Knowledge, no matter how profound, must be balanced with commonsense, for without it, wisdom is like a river that overflows, destroying even the most studious of banks.
